What the NIE is and when you need it
The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the number that identifies you to the Spanish administration. You need it for almost everything: signing a rental or purchase contract, opening a bank account, buying a car, working or registering as self-employed. It is requested with form EX-15 and fee 790-012, and it does not make you a resident.
You need it before almost any step in Spain, even if you will not live here: a purchase, a rental, a job, a business, a bank account or an inheritance. The number is assigned once and stays yours. We currently only help EU, EEA and Swiss citizens: for other nationalities the procedure is different (a visa or a family-member card) and we do not take those cases.
Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need?
A valid passport or ID card, form EX-15, the paid 790-012 fee and proof of the reason (arras contract, job offer, enrolment, bank letter…). We tell you exactly which proof fits your case.
How much does it cost?
Our price includes the official 790-012 fee, so you pay one amount. In Málaga province, where we also accompany you to the appointment: €150. Elsewhere in Spain we do everything except accompany you: €110. Each extra family member at the same appointment is +€100. We confirm the price in writing before we start and you pay nothing until you confirm.
How long does it take?
The slow part is getting the appointment at the immigration office or police station, which varies by province and time of year. With the paperwork ready, the NIE is usually issued at the appointment or a few days later.
Do I have to attend the appointment in person?
Yes. Fingerprints and the identity check are done in person. We prepare the forms, pay the fee and book the appointment on your behalf. In Málaga province we accompany you; elsewhere in Spain you attend alone with the folder ready.
Where do you operate?
We accompany you to appointments in Málaga province (Marbella, Málaga, Estepona, Fuengirola, Torremolinos…). Elsewhere in Spain we handle all the paperwork and the booking, but you attend the appointment alone.
Can I book the appointment myself?
Yes, on the immigration office's online booking system. In Málaga and Marbella slots go fast and you have to keep checking, which is why many clients ask us to do it for them, with their authorisation.
I am a freelancer and not registered as autónomo yet. Can I get the NIE first?
Yes. The NIE comes first, with the start of your activity as the reason, and the tax and Social Security registrations follow with it.
I am an EU citizen moving to Spain for good. Is the NIE enough?
The NIE gives you the number you need for contracts, banks and work. Living in Spain for more than three months as an EU citizen also requires the EU registration certificate, which is a separate procedure we do not handle at the moment.
I am not an EU citizen. Can you help?
Not at the moment. We only help EU, EEA and Swiss citizens. For other nationalities the procedure is different (a visa, or the family-member-of-EU-citizen card) and we do not take those cases.
Are you a gestoría or a law firm?
No. We are an administrative assistance service: we prepare the paperwork, pay the fee and manage the appointment. We do not give advice on your case; if it needs another kind of professional, we tell you.
